I'd say Sameal, Xy and Vorph are phenomenal Musicians.

Arsis, Dream Theater, Children of Bodom, Into Eternity are all prime examples of extremely technical playing.

As far as straight guitar playing is concerned, you have bands like DragonForce. And you may not enjoy their music, but the talent of playing at that speed and the complexity of their arrangements cannot be questioned.
As far as drumming is concerned, there's Strapping Young Lad. Gene Hoglan is simply the best drummer in the last twenty years.

Love Hoglan, but whomever is the best drummer in the genre' is a matter of debate and personal taste. At any rate, it's a damn shame that Townsend folded up the SYL tent. I still consider City the best album of '97.

I was pretty upset by that, too. "City" was such a great album.

Children of Bodom definately, Alexi kicks ass
Megadeth of course, Dave Mustaine shreds with fury and grace
Exodus, Gary Holt is rips wheneverhe picksup a guitar
Metallica, the Mustaine Years

I agree....but....need to add the mighty CONFESSOR! Collapse into Despair muthafuckas

Check out Psyopus - masters of math/tech metal! Especially their first two albums. Also, Nile & Krisiun come to mind. Taking metal to a new level of technical annihilation!

i was reading through this and was about to say how the hell has no one said Psyopus, thank you for finally mentioning them. I would also maybe add Lye Bye Mistake, kind of like Psyopus but mixed with a jam band.
