Believers In The Power of Metal

So I was exploring the furthest reaches of the inter-web, and stumbled upon a review of " the red album" by Baroness, It said nothing but good things so I ordered it, and very quickly fell in love with it. I got to thinking If I could only have 5 albums/bands to listen to forever, or must have albums what would they be.

in no particular order

1) Agalloch (the mantle)
2) Baroness (the red album)
3) Old In Flames ( although "a sense of purpose" is great)
4) Machinehead ( The Blackening) ( I know, I know)
5) Devin Townsend ( Metal genius, and canadian to boot)

This is a great way to discover new bands and share the belief in metal

My Must Have's-
Slayer-Seasons In The Abyss
Metallica-Kill 'Em All
Sepultura-Chaos AD
Tool-Lateralus
Black Sabbath-Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

The Five I'd kick myself for NOT picking;

Helmet-Meantime
Only Living Witness-Prone Mortal Form
Fudge Tunnel-The Complicated Futility Of Ignorence
The Melvins-Houdini

Baroness is fucking sick. I just saw them with Converge.. pretty epic.

TV Party, Slip it in... Classic goodness!

But the best album from them, Family Man.

This is a very difficult question for me 'cuz there are SO many metal essentials out there! Some more obvious than others. But here goes:

Judas Priest - Defenders Of The Faith
Voivod - Killing Technology
Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
Overkill - Taking Over
Testament - The Legacy
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
The Crown - Deathrace King
Dirty Rotten Imbeciles - Dealing With It
Exodus - Fabulous Disaster
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Hypocrisy - Abducted
Suicidal Tendencies - S/T
Anthrax - Among The Living
Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal
Obituary - Cause Of Death
Napalm Death - Scum
Manowar - Fighting The World
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
Fear Factory - Obsolete
Annihilator - Alison Hell
Nasum - Helvete
Nile - Black Seeds Of Vengeance

There are many more that need to be listed, but this will get you started. Now git shoppin'!!!

I agree with almost all of those bands, but would have chosen a different must have from most of them, especially for LOG and Cephalic Carnage. I'd go with As the Palaces Burn and Anomolies far above the two you listed, not that those arent great.

I've only recently discovered Cephalic Carnage, I've heard a few tunes from Anomolies which are pretty badass, but I'll stick with my choice for now. As for L.O.G., I started listening to them when Ashes Of The Wake came out so that's why that's my pick from them.

as long as one of those tunes is Dying Will Be the Death Of Me

I know a lot of these have been repeated, but some of my personal favorites include:

Sepultura - "Arise", "Morbid Visions", "Chaos A.D."
Exodus - "Bonded By Blood" and "Fabulous Disaster"
Testament - "The Gathering"
Life Of Agony - "River Runs Red"
Pentagram - "Day Of Reckoning" and "Be Forewarned"
Coven - "S/T" (Jinx Dawson is AMAZING!)
Sarcofago - The Laws Of Scourge
Reflux - The Illusion Of Democracy
Aletheian aka Crutch - Admidst Despair, Hope Prevails (for fans of Death and Cynic)

Aletheian is fucking amazing. One of their guitarists, Alex Kennis, is also in a band called Becoming the Archetype, which is also very very good. Both Aletheian and BTA are recommended for fans of Living Sacrifice, Extol, and other crossover thrash/death bands.

Hahaha you know Alex too? Seriously sweetest dude ever. And I whole heartedly agree that BTA is for fans of Living Sacrifice along with old Vessel and Tantrum Of the Muse. Dying Vine is a great album, but hearing "Break In The Clouds" was what got me hooked on them.

They're the reason I love me headless Steinburgers. Hehe.
