Check out Psyopus - masters of math/tech metal! Especially their first two albums. Also, Nile & Krisiun come to mind. Taking metal to a new level of technical annihilation!

i was reading through this and was about to say how the hell has no one said Psyopus, thank you for finally mentioning them. I would also maybe add Lye Bye Mistake, kind of like Psyopus but mixed with a jam band.

Vegard Sverre Tveitan or better known as Ihsahn of emperor and now his progressive metal side project is probably one of the most technical at his self composed works. his works are hghly skilled and combines lyrics with sorrow and ties it up with epic riffs. his works in the band emperor have set new standards for the black metal scene and developed melodic and symphonic black metal. he also played in an advante gard band known as peccatum and has his own side project where he plays with divinity on guitars and the keyboard. he is deffinantly one of the most technical and talented musicians of our time.

LOL @ The guy who said "Metallica is the Mustaine years". Do you even know what "technical" means?

Dream Theater is my vote.

Every band is a little technical, so to say you do not like technical your practical saying you don’t link any band. Well I mean what I understand technical is as “relating to technique or proficiency in a practical skill" and if that what you are referring to then you do not like bands with skill. And if that is true then maybe you are part of the mainstream because in my complete opinion I think those who are the mainstream do not listen for skill, but just because they are backed on the radio or by a rich label. That’s why I listen to metal is because most bands are not out there to sell themselves but to create art. And if you do not have skill or worse do and use it to sell yourself that is wrong. That is disrespectful to art of all genres and Medias.

Let me rephrase that. I don't like overly-technical metal. It bores me.
